One Pillar Pagoda

Una pagoda de un pilar
One Pillar Pagoda (Ong Ich Khiem St — Ngoc Ha, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) – located next to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in the center of Hanoi is this unique structure (a.k.a. Dien Huu Pagoda). It was built by King Ly Thai Tong during the 11th century. Built of wood on a single stone pillar, the pagoda is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, the symbol of purity, rising out of a sea of sorrow. One of the last acts of the French colonizers before leaving Hanoi in 1954 was to destroy the original One Pillar Pagoda – the current structure (which acts as a Buddhist temple) was rebuilt by the new government. Free admission. Hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (daily).
